Pedestrian Coach and Sydney music publicist Stacey Piggott knows a thing or two about music publicity – and she’s ready to spill the beans on how to get your music heard, because she sure as hell didn’t know when she first started.
Working as a freelance journo by day and waitressing at a Mexican restaurant by night, Stacey’s only musical forays had involved digging through her parents’ well-curated record collection. Fellow Mexican waitress AKA Donna Simpson of The Waifs, had a new record and tour coming up and asked Stacey to run their publicity. At 21, and having not done anything like it before Stacey thought, “I could give it a shot,” and the rest is history.
Things were a lot harder back then, PRE internet. Building databases involved sitting on the floor of a newsagent, copying down names and numbers from papers and magazines. Contacting people meant cold calling everyone individually. Sending out a new song meant mailing CDs, not sending a SoundCloud link. Oh, those were the days…
The times have changed but the principles and ideas remain the same. Having worked with the likes of Cog, The Jezabels, The Drones, Bon Iver, Neil Finn’s Pajama Club, Henry Rollins, Ash Grunwald, Gareth Liddiard and Augie March, Stacey now runs her own PR company Two Fish Out of Water and knows so much about publicity, she could write a book on it. And that she did.
Drawing from these experiences (as well as those taken from working events like Falls, Sunset Sounds and the ARIA Awards), Stacey penned the aptly titled Blow Your Own Trumpet. Filled with stories and experiences from artists from different genres, at different levels, it dispels music myths and gives the reader tools to get their own music out there.
