Credit where it’s due, there aren’t too many new ways to execute the time-weathered Rickroll anymore. But Foo Fighters and the man himself may well have pulled one off.
Dave Grohl and his band of merry foos served as a headliner at the Summer Sonic festival in Tokyo over the weekend. Also on the lineup? One Rick Astley, he who will never give you up, nor let you down, nor run around and etc.
Never one to pass up an opportunity for a gag, Grohl brought Astley out on-stage to rip through a tune together, with Grohl himself exclaiming “this is fucking crazy, I just met him two minutes ago.”
Now you, a normal person, might think that the band would simply roll through a stock-standard rendition of ‘Never Gonna Give You Up‘ in observance of the fact that, yes, it is indeed a meme on the internet.
But Grohl, a genious brain, took things one step further by leading the newly-formed supergroup through a live mashup of the aforementioned Rickrollin’ tune and ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit.’
The lyrics. They fit a little *too* well into Nirvana’s iconic track. Peep it.
That’s some top quality gag-work there, pals. Stadium-level music memes. Gotta bloody love it.
