Rebecca Black’s label-mate and heir apparent, the eleven-year-old Alison Gold of Chinese Food infamy, is both the hapless star and victim of the latest drivel produced by unabashed serial pest Patrice Wilson of ARK Music Factory notoriety.
Not only is the video for her new single Shush Up (girl can’t even say ‘Shut Up’) wilfully and blatantly exploitative of a guileless young girl and her evidently impervious caregivers (Gold at eleven apes tropes of adult sexuality well beyond her years in a variety of outfits and makeup you wouldn’t wish on anyone, let alone a child) it’s also offensively unoriginal and wholly derivative.
Watching Shush Up like being called upon to babysit the bastard of Telephone and any Ke$ha video, or a continuation in the sad, unnatural legacy of JonBenét Ramsey. The song is also – it should go without saying – terrible; the choreography an inadvertent homage to Regina George’s little sister dancing to Milkshake. It’s the literal definition of jailbait. It’s not cute.
In an interview with Mosh News addressing a petition launched against Wilson today with the aim of keeping him “away from young girls”, Wilson describes how he won’t let “haters get in the way of my passion [for] pure art. This video is simply art and in my opinion, has a lot of creative elements to it.”
