DFA & LCD Soundsystem Art Show Heads To Oz

The Splendour juggernaut is a mere week or so from rolling into town. We’re dusting off our converse for The Strokes, practicing our best falsetto voices for Hot Chip, getting the tissues out for Broken Social Scene, ready for our faces to be melted to Foals and happy to be in the company of Frank Black & Kim Deal for the second time this year.

One of the most exciting acts and momentous shows of this year’s Splendour tour will surely be LCD Soundsystem’s final farewell. Their latest and final record This Is Happening has been on high-rotation at Pedestrian HQ, and we can’t wait to see New York’s finest onstage with their giant mirror ball and vintage microphones. Oh, and the Nancy Whang actor. NANCY WHANG.

To coincide with the band’s shows, LCD Soundsystem and DFA are presenting a visual retrospective of their inspired artwork entitled “That’s Cool But Can You Make It More Sh*t?” in Sydney. DFA Art Director, Michael Vadino explains the name of the exhibition: “It fits with the philosophy. It’s always come from this place of… nothing should be too perfect… nothing was ever meant to be precious. It’s all contemplated and purposeful but it needs to look more… shitty…”

On display will be the works such as the original sketch of the now ‘instantly recognisable’ lightning bolt of the DFA label’s logo, a selection of DFA’s commercial artwork, tour posters, invites for DFA parties around the world and more. Vadino will also be bringing a selection of exclusive material from James Murphy’s collection as Vadino says, “I’m surprised I was able to pull so much stuff together… I was digging around in closets to find this stuff. It’s going to be great for people to see the cohesive aesthetic of everything all together”.

The exhibition will be open from Wednesday July 28 until Tuesday August 3, 11am to 6pm daily, at the Tom Dunne Gallery, 11 Little Burton Street, Darlinghurst NSW.
