Daniel Johns Covers Nirvana, Aussie Legends Galore: Highlights From Triple J’s ‘Beat The Drum’

Australia’s youth radio stalwart, Triple J, has celebrated turning 40 years young – almost sharing a birthday with Kate Moss, minus a year, which is a terrible and irrelevant aside, purely inserted to self-serve my own Kate Moss <3 so, let’s move right along – with a helluva bang in Sydney’s Domain last night for their Beat The Drum showcase of Strayan talent.

25,000 loyal fans, undoubtedly disgruntled by the whole #Tay4Hottest100 hilarity — even if Triple J has been all *this* regarding the whole thing — to witness some of Australia’s biggest homegrown acts pay homage to the station that’s been a source of comfort and reliability for freaking ever, it seems.

One of the biggest moments of the night was Silverchair’s Daniel Johns performing a stirring cover of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” – a ballsy choice for a song that is so frequently covered in various degrees of hideous. Daniel Johns nails it, though:

And where the bloody hell has Wally been? Gotye made a very welcome appearance at the concert, sashaying subtly away from “Somebody That I Used To Know” with performances of “Heart’s A Mess” and “Thanks For Your Time”:

Highlight recordings of the event will be broadcast on Triple J at 8pm on Monday, and 5pm on January 25.
