Brit Group One Direction To Play At 2012 Logies

British boy band One Direction have been confirmed as a headline musical act at this year’s Logie Awards. You know the Logies? TV Week’s annual awards ceremony dedicated to honouring the best (if not most popular) contributions to Australian television. Australian television. And so you would think, considering the purpose of the event is for back patting local TV achievements, the organisers would sign up some equally-local talent to provide the live tunes on the night. But for whatever reason, the Logie Awards have regularly eschewed that obvious (and presumably cheaper) move, in favour for big name international guest stars like last year’s Katy Perry.

Oh, we all know the reason. It’s just a creative cross-promotion strategy for major networks. Case in point, the extremely popular One Direction are graduates from the UK version of The X Factor, the next Australian season of which is coming soon to Channel 7. And ex-Mr Heidi Klum, Seal, will also perform at this year’s cauldron of awful, more than likely to promote the forthcoming Channel Nine singing contest The Voice Australia.

Is it a good or bad thing that they haven’t asked Delta Goodrem?

Come on, Logie organisers: get rid of the fossilised format already and provide viewers with an event that’s a reflection of the vast talent in Australia’s film and television industry.
