Bleeding Knees Club “Nothing To Do” Track By Track

Gold Coast troublemakers Bleeding Knees Club are dropping their debut LP Nothing To Do in stores TODAY (Friday March 2 for those of you reading this in the past or future). Drummer/vocalist Alex Wall talked us through each track on the album, most of which are about girls, partying, nihilism and “derros”, like all good songs. Buy the album now. It’s available for all good music stores.

Teenage Girls: This song was originally off our EP but when we recorded that version we could barely play our instruments and I couldn’t sing at all so it sounded pretty crap, but it was our favourite song on the EP. So when it came around to doing our album we really wanted to re-do it and it ended up being one of our favourite songs and used it as a single.

Hate Me: I wrote this song in New York like a week before we went into the studio. It’s kind of a back and forth story about how you can hate a girl but every time you go out to a party or something you always end up with her. Then you end up hating yourself more then you hate the girl.

Beach Slut: This song was real cool to record. Dev [Dev Hynes AKA Blood Orange who produced the album] played bass and keys on it which was really cool. I remember when we did the slow parts it was just me in the vocal booth and Dev in the studio with a keyboard looking at each other trying to get the timing right, and it was super romantic.

Problem Child: I think I wrote this while we were over seas on our UK trip too. Everyone had that shit kid in their grade at school that started drinking when they were like 12 and thinking they were real cool. And now they are derros that are into cars and shit. This song is about those losers.

Girls Can Do Anything: This is my favourite song on the album. It’s about nothing and doesn’t mean anything. But it’s my favourite. It was real cool to record cause Dev brought a bunch of girls into the studio and had them sing backup vocals which was rad. I remember one of the girls brought a dog in the studio and it was running around. It real cute moment.

Lipstick: This is the only song that wasn’t recorded in New York. We recorded this at the same place that we made our EP. I got really into Doo Wop and 60s girl group music, and this is my kinda version of that style I guess.

Boy in Lust: I met a girl in Brisbane who was really good at partying, and I was really jealous because she could party really hard and wake up at like 5am the next day and go to work at some full pro job. I would wake up and be in bed dying all day. So this song is about her.

Brainwaves: Just before I went to the UK last year I got kinda sick and was throwing up everyday and my stomach was fucked and I couldn’t eat anything or drink and it was the worst like 6 months ever. This song is about waking up feeling shit every day but still trying to go out and party and hang with my friends.

Let it go: This is one of the only songs me and Jordan have wrote together. We wrote it the night before we recorded and I think it’s easily one of my favourite songs on the album. Dev’s ideas for the back up vocals really made this song, I think.

Nothing to do: Is a song about being bored with everything in life.

Who are you: This is about everyone telling me how to do things and what to do. We were working with this guy at one point and he would always tell me how I should act and do things and it was super annoying. This song took me ages to do the Vocals for some reason. I think I ended up re doing them in London like 3 weeks after we recorded the album.

Same Game: saaaaaame gaaaaaaameeeeeee.
