Azealia Banks Is Still Not Into Aussie Festival Crowds Or “Twinks”

Realistically a lot of people really fucking enjoy it when a celebrity has an unfiltered social media presence and unapologetically expresses their personal brand. It balances out the bullshit PR-fuelled circle jerks to which we have become accustomed across ‘the media.’

This can be seen with the prevalence and popularity of the ‘twitter beef’ subgenre of shitty pop culture articles. Welcome, by the way.

Since her set at Splendour in the Grass this past weekend, Azealia Banks who has previously described ‘STRAYA as “notoriously racist” and implied that “gay men get a special pass to say misogynistic things simply because they like dick,” has hit the headlines by responding to a tweet by self-professed “shock jock” Paul ‘Browny’ Brown

What possible motivation could someone have for writing antagonistic tweets @AZEALIABANKS? It’s almost as if they expect her to respond angrily?

Azealia…breh.

If only the people involved had subsequent radio appearances promoting themselves and the ‘feud’ to which we could look for answers

On whether Azealia had a point about the Splendour crowd, though:

Banks has previously been pelted with bottles whilst on an Australian stage and, for anyone sadly not pinging their brains off at her Splendour gig, you will have seen that multiple water bottles were actually thrown in her direction throughout the course of the set. This time around she was obviously prepped and, whilst looking bloody ropeable for multiple seconds, she kept on going.

Imagine you’re an absolute fuckwit, though, and you know Banks’ track record, despite not necessarily being a fan of her music or caring either way whether you see her play. You’d probably throw a bottle to see what happened. And there is certainly an element of that here but also, in the past 24 hours alone we have two people of colour very publicly complaining about Aussie mob rule and expressing frustration that few people are willing to recognise their experiences.

There is no side to take here, Azealia Banks is routinely offensive and no, Australian crowds are not ‘the worst in the world‘ but we certainly do not want to be known as the molls who can’t handle their piss and become absolute pests en masse so we probably need to take several seats and listen when people say that’s what we are.
