5 Things That Weren’t Miley Cyrus Twerking At The MTV VMA’s

Miley Cyrus has been the hottest topic the world over in the last 24 hours, as we got all twerked up at her hyper-raunchy, horny-porny performance with “Blurred Lines” singer Robin Thicke at the MTV Video Music Awards in New York. But, contrary to the internet, there was actually a full awards ceremony, with plenty of other stuff going on. Here’s 5 of our non-Miley highlights.

1. N*Sync reunited.

Yeah they did! World beater Justin Timberlake was joined on stage by Lance Bass, J.C. Chasez, Joey Fatone and Chris Kirkpatrick (who are in various phases of developing “I’ve been out of the spotlight for a decade” chubbiness) in a reunion performance that had us all reminiscing about spending Saturday mornings watching Video Hits in 2001.

2. One Direction were booed.

British boy band One Direction won Song Of The Summer for their track “Best Song Ever”, and were audibly booed by a large section of the crowd as they accepted the award. They managed to grin and bare it on stage, but an empathetic Lady Gaga leapt out of her seat and ran to the boys’ sides, interrupting their backstage “thank you cam” speech, telling them “If I did hear what I think I just heard out there, I want to tell you that you deserve every bit of success that you have. I feel like I want to leave right now. I don’t want to stay. I don’t want to be in a room where people are booing.”

3. Daft Punk presented an award.

Daft Punk recently blew off performing on The Colbert Report to perform at the VMA’s, but they didn’t actually end up performing at the VMA’s. They did, however, preview a video for their latest single “Lose Yourself To Dance”, and the robots were joined onstage by collaborators Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers to present Taylor Swift with her award for Best Female Video.

4. Lady Gaga sang “Applause”

After three on-stage costume changes, Lady Gaga actually managed to wind up in an outfit skimpier than Miley‘s latex-kini during her performance of new single “Applause”, but since her modus operandi has been shock and awe since day one, she didn’t generate nearly as many dropped jaws as the once-innocent Miley. We’re just glad it wasn’t made out of meat this time.

5. Kanye West performed in the dark

It appears that since becoming a father, Kanye is shying away from the
bombast and controversy (“Imma let you finish…”) he’s always been known for. His disappointingly
human and not-at-all eyebrow-raising TV interview with mother-in-law Kris Jenner last week was followed up by his shadowy performance of
“Blood On The Leaves”, in which the guy who loves the spotlight remained more or less in the dark. The performance saw Kanye match Madonna‘s record of seven VMA musical appearances.
