Esports in the western world is, I would say, in its awkward teenage years. It’s old enough to know what it’s doing, but dumb enough to make some honest mistakes, which is kinda what happened when Blizzard invited DJ Khaled to perform at the Overwatch League Finals over the weekend.

For those who don’t know what the fuck I’m talking about, Overwatch is a competitive video game and the event itself was a big deal amongst the community because, well, it was the finals. Fans packed out Brooklyn‘s Barclay’s Centre to watch Philly Fusion take on London Spitfire for the grand prize, and who better to open the proceedings than Mr “ANOTHER ONE” himself?
Now, I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with DJ Khaled. Each to their own, etc. But what we had here was a classic mismatch of talent, which is clearly evidenced by the crowd’s baffled reactions to the artist. Take a look below.
Tough crowd. But hey, if I turned up to watch some Overwatch and was suddenly greeted by DJ fucking Khaled, I’d be weirded out, too. He’s a big name, sure, but bloody hell, read the room, Blizzard.
My favourite part is when he yells “OVERWATCH ME” and does the laziest, sloppiest dance I’ve ever seen. I’m not sure whether that’s a man, or a hungry dog tapping his impatient little feet at the foot of his bowl, demanding it be filled immediately.

Yeah, he has no idea. Kudos to the man for giving it a red hot go, but I don’t think he’ll be booked for an esports gig again anytime soon.
