A New ‘Star Trek’ Deal Might Bring Patrick Stewart Back On Your TVs

Star Trek: Discovery is pretty damn good. It’s a really solid reimagining of the classic Trek universe with all the trappings of a contemporary sci-fi TV show. Despite a bit of tumult behind the scenes, it seems to be getting back into a kind of stride.

So it’s perhaps no surprise that CBS Television Studios has decided to hand the reigns for their whole Star Trek operation over to its recently promoted showrunner Alex Kurtzman. He’s signed a five-year deal that’ll put him in charge of all Trek projects in that window – and probably beyond it too, if he wants.

There’s a diverse range of projects in the pipeline, including a show aimed at younger viewers called Starfleet Academy helmed by the brains behind Dynasty and Gossip Girl. But a particularly intriguing rumour – courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter – claims there a rumblings of a show which might feature Patrick Stewart.

For those not in the know, Stewart had a long run playing Captain Jean-Luc Picard in TV and film from 1987 through to 2003. His legend is such that Trekkies duel endlessly over whether he makes a more compelling captain than William Shatner‘s James T. Kirk.

It would also line up with a short video appearance form Stewart which seemed to tease his involvement in something related to Discovery earlier this month. It could also be the weird ramblings of a very, very old man, but…

Before you go too wild, the actual deal with Kurtzman isn’t actually finalised yet, so it may not even happen at all. And if it does, there’s no telling whether this alleged Patrick Stewart project is one of the four Star Trek shows which are purportedly in some form of development at CBS.

But if he does? Wild! Your nerd dad is going to bloody love it!
