Sigourney Weaver has confirmed that she’ll be returning to one of her most beloved roles when Ghostbusters 3 hits cinemas next year, joining original cast members Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd in the sequel.
The actress confirmed the news in a recent interview with Parade magazine, saying “it’s going to be crazy working with these guys again.” Sigourney Weaver starred in the original 1984 Ghostbusters, as well as its sequel in 1989.
In the first film, she played Dana Barrett, a cellist whose refrigerator is haunted by Zuul, the demonic servant of Gozer the Gozerian. She calls the Ghostbusters for help, leading to a romance with Murray’s Peter Venkman.
She said that she always had confidence the film would be hit, telling the publication: “I knew it would be big. The script was so funny and full of heart. Ghostbusters changed my life.”
She did not go into any detail as to the plot of the next instalment, but it will be directed by Jason Reitman, son of original director Ivan Reitman.
Ghostbusters 3 is due for release in 2020, and alongside Sigourney Weaver, Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd, the cast will include McKenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard and Carrie Coon.
It’s unclear at this stage whether Ernie Hudson will be returning, but earlier this year, he said he’d had a “general conversation” about it with the filmmakers, so I guess we’ll see.Image: Getty Images / Luca Carlino
