‘OITNB’ Hasn’t Even Ended Yet & There’s Already Talk Of A “Potential Sequel”

Orange Is The New Black hasn’t even come to an end yet and there’s already chatter about a followup series and is that not the most 2018 thing you’ve ever heard?

Less than a month after announcing that the upcoming seventh season of the Netflix series would be its last, producers at Lionsgate Television are already plotting how they can extend the series, The Hollywood Reporter reveals.

“We’re really proud of the long run that Orange Is the New Black had,” Lionsgate TV Group chairman Kevin Beggs told reporters. “It remains one of Netflix’s most-watched shows. We’re ending on a high note. Keep in mind we own that series and will be distributing it for years to come. We’re already in discussions and, when the timing is right, we’ll talk further with Jenji about a potential sequel.”

Sources close to Lionsgate TV say that the studio and Kohan have had ongoing chats about a potential sequel to the series for quite some time but admitted that nothing is in the immediate works.

Exec producer Tara Herrmann previously told the publication that the team has discussed several potential spinoff ideas including a Broadway production, or following couples Larry Bloom (Jason Biggs) and Polly Harper (Maria Dizzia) or Cal and Carol Chapman (Deborah Rush).

Although she reckons that expanding the OITNB universe feels too much like “robbing from the mothership”.

“We want people to pay attention to the show we’re making, not a musical number with Piper and Alex. But that could happen in the future, who knows!”

The final season of Orange Is the New Black will hit Netflix in 2019.
