It’s more or less confirmed at this point that we’ll be getting at least one new Star Wars movie every single year until the heat death of the universe. Now, Rian Johnson – who helmed The Last Jedi – has been given the green light to take on an entirely new Star Wars trilogy.
Yeah, that means new characters, new story, new galaxy, the works. Johnson is set to write and direct all three films, but there’s no date on the project for now.
“We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, on the website. “He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.”
There has been a few dramas when it comes to directors on the Star Wars franchise. The directors of the upcoming Han Solo spinoff were booted from the project, and Colin Trevorrow, who was tapped to direct Episode IX, was also dropped. But the relationship with Johnson has been much better, and he’s the first director since George Lucas to score a solo credit on a Star Wars movie.
Johnson and his longtime collaborator Ram Bergman issued a statement about the new trilogy:
We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on The Last Jedi. Star Wars is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it. We can’t wait to continue with this new series of films.
Pretty interesting future for the franchise. Johnson also took to Twitter for a much formal take on his brand new project.
