‘Avengers’ Directors Say The Next One Is A Big Bloody Heist Flick, In Space

We’re a decade into the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s prolific stream of destruction porn, and the powers that be have decided the rampant flattening of international landmarks is no longer enough: they’re dipping into genre tropes to give their superpower stories a little more edge.

After the release of Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok, which was widely praised for reinvigorating the Thor franchise with its buddy comedy dynamic, the Russo brothers have declared the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War will borrow from the world of heist flicks.

Speaking to CNET about the impending superhero maelstrom, directors Anthony and Joe Russo said the storyline – in which big baddie Thanos seeks out the titular Infinity Stones for nefarious purposes – kinda lends itself to that kind of caper storytelling.

Describing Thanos’ presence and the fact “he’s almost one of the leads,” Anthony says they’ll be injecting the movie with some frantic action.

We’ve shaped an interesting narrative around him that in some ways leans heavily on a heist film in the fact that he’s going after the infinity stones in a much bolder, successful way than he has in the past.

The entire movie has that energy of the bad guy being one step ahead of the heroes. We looked at a lot of movies that had that heist-style energy to them, [and] that brought some inspiration.

So, we’re here hoping it’ll be Reservoir Dogs with Tony Stark. Snatch with The Hulk. The Usual Suspects with The Collector. (Wait, shit, Benecio Del Toro was in Snatch and The Usual Suspects anyway. Never mind.)

The brothers also expounded on how the film, which is already tailor-made to be packed with characters from across the universe, will still feature some goodies fans mightn’t expect. You can catch their whole chat right HERE.
