The Golden Globe nominations are out, and surprise, surprise – Get Out has scored a nomination for Best Motion Picture…. Musical or Comedy.
The news that Get Out, Jordan Peele‘s groundbreaking horror around racism, had been submitted in this particular category (rather than the Best Motion Picture: Drama one that it so clearly belongs in) rankled a few feathers earlier this year, but Peele himself took it on the chin.
Some saw it an attempt to ‘play’ the awards system and score an easy win (similar to The Martian‘s controversial win for best comedy or musical in 2016), but its category is actually pretty stacked. It’s up against James Franco‘s lauded The Disaster Artist, safe bet The Greatest Showman, powerhouse I, Tonya, and film festival darling Lady Bird.
Get Out also scored a Best Performance nod for the film’s star, Daniel Kaluuya, but surprisingly snubbed Peele himself for Best Director. Again, he seems to be taking it pretty well.
Other films that absolutely cleaned up include queer love story (and another film festival darling) Call Me By Your Name, with nods for star Timothée Chalamet, co-star Armie Hammer, and a nom for Best Motion Picture; Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, with four noms including ones for star Frances McDormand and director Martin McDonagh; Christopher Nolan‘s Dunkirk, with cleaned up three nominations; and Ridley Scott‘s All The Money In The World, which scored three nominations despite the fact that no one’s even seen it yet.
Given Scott’s in the middle of reshoots after replacing Kevin Spacey with Christopher Plummer and the thing will still only be delayed by three days, there’s an argument to be made that he deserves that nomination regardless.
Over in the TV side of things, it’s a bunch of your faves from the last year: Game of Thrones, The Handmaid’s Tale, The Crown, Stranger Things, This Is Us, Outlander, Master of None, Will & Grace, Black-Ish, Big Little Lies, Fargo, Twin Peaks and The Sinner. Shout-out to Jessica Biel for that last one, who produced and starred in The Sinner and is now nominated in the same category as Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Jessica Lange and Susan Sarandon.
