Wil Anderson Talks Qantas, Matt Newton And A New Gruen Spinoff

We attended the GQ Man of the Year awards last night to A) feel inadequate and B) ask some questions. The former was achieved instantly but the latter took some time on the count of the v. intimidating men in v. intimidating suits. Eventually we managed to steal some time with master of ceremonies Wil Anderson (dude’s seriously the only MC option in town) to discuss how Gruen may have handled this week’s media stories and why corporate social media accounts are like Toolies. Below, Australia’s topical dick joke factory offers some advice for Matt Newton and Qantas and hints at the possibility of a new Gruen spinoff.

What are your plans for next year? Every year starts with exactly the same thing, and that’s putting on my tour. This year will be my 17th year at the Melbourne Comedy Festival. So I start with that, then build the rest of my year around that schedule. There’ll be more Gruen of some kind. We’ll probably do another season of Planet, that seemed to be something that people like and we liked doing. But we’ll probably do something else as well, there will probably be a new Gruen show next year.

Wow, that’s exciting. It’s actually a shame you guys wrapped for the year. I know. This week we could have done Matthew Newton, Kerri-Anne getting replaced by Sonia Kruger and Qantas. It would have been a great week for us.

Well, now’s your chance. Any advice for Matt, Kerri-Anne and Qantas? I think with Matthew, what people need to hear from him is that he’s sorry. That’s the logical starting point if you’re going to come out on television. I mean, people understand that you go through rough periods in your life but until you say that you’re sorry and admit the hurt and harm that you’ve caused it’s very hard to rebuild you reputation. Because up until then people just think it’s spin and PR. Qantas, don’t get involved in social media unless you understand it. Understand that as a big company you can’t be like “hey social media!”. They’re basically a Toolie at Schoolies week. Everyone’s like “Don’t go near the guy in the aqua suit! He doesn’t belong here, he’s dangerous.” And finally for Kerri-Anne, I just hope she goes back to midday where she belongs.”
