When Aussies Break Bad: Terminally Ill Queensland Man Grows Weed To Secure His Family’s Financial Future

Never would we be audacious enough to suggest that a critically acclaimed TV drama series glorifying the business of methamphetamine empires is responsible for the recent spate of mum and pop drug operations flooding the country at the moment. But neither are we informed enough to say that it isn’t.

Following news of a group of  Queenslanders who were caught cooking meth in an RV turned mobile drug lab and the Melbourne grandmother charged with growing marijuana to keep her family together, comes news of a terminally ill Queensland man who grew Snoop and Rihanna on holiday in Barbados amounts of weed to secure his children’s financial future.

But the similarities don’t end there. In 2011, Bryan Cranston namesake Brian Peter Hepburn was diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer and given just two years to live (just like Walter White). In response, the grandfather of 20 dedicated his remaining time and energy to ensuring the financial stability of his loved ones through illegal drug operations (just like Walter White). He also worked in tandem with a male accomplice who may or may not be into science and nihilism.

But as is so often the case with Walter White, things didn’t quite go to plan.

Last August, the 64-year-old who knocks was arrested for cultivating around about 3000 cannabis plants on a property outside of Cooktown in North Queensland and yesterday pleaded guilty to producing and
possessing dangerous drugs in the Cairns District Court.

“You
determined you had nothing left to leave your family and embarked on
this cultivation…so you had (money) to leave your family,”
Judge
Michael Shanahan said during sentencing.

For breaking bad, Hepburn
will serve time at the Lotus Glen Correctional
Centre in Far North Queensland.

This doesn’t bode well for Mr White.
