‘Star Wars’ Fans Theorise The New Trailer Sports A *Double* Misdirection

Yesterday, Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson warned fans to skip today’s trailer if they wanted to enter the cinema totally free of spoilers. We have to admit: the bloke seems to have a point.

While the film’s major plot points are still mercifully unknown, today’s trailer does point towards a conflict between Rey’s (Daisy Ridley) desire to cultivate her Force sensitivity, and Luke Skywalker’s (Mark Hamill) wish to bring the Jedi Order to a close.

“This is not going to go the way you think,” Skywalker says. Interesting.

Still, the biggest potential twist comes in the trailer’s final moments, when Rey says “I need someone to show me my place in all this,” as the visuals cut to Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) offering his Sith-y hand.

As you may have expected, there are a couple of theories kicking around about that one. The first, and seemingly the most simple, is that whichever boffins knocked this trailer together did so just to get us all speculating. Hell, it’s obvious Rey and Ren are in separate locations; maybe she never asks Ren for his take at all.

AND YET. Over on the Star Wars subreddit, user /u/Captain_Flemme speculates that Ren does extend his hand to Rey, but the shot of him was snipped from a different portion of the film.

Speculation only continues from there. /u/Pinktini bolsters the above hypothesis, with the idea that there aren’t exactly many people in a galaxy far, far away that Ren would willingly reach out to.

There’s also the theory that maybe Ren had a change of heart, and was actually reaching out to his uncle Luke in a moment of abject desperation. Look, the guy seems pretty torn, it could happen.

Then, there’s speculation that this was a big ol’ switcheroo, courtesy of /u/MyanRueller.

While fans are busy dissecting this one for concrete meaning, there is one solid take: it’s likely we’re all set to be bamboozled when the film arrives on December 15.
