Watch: Inspiring Aussie Short Film About Gay Teen Love

If Stephen Fry thinks it’s “amazing”, it probably is.

As career-advancing reward for winning a national monologue competition held by the Australian Theatre for Young People, 17 year old HSC student and emerging Sydney playwright Kim Ho was assisted in turning his original three minute monologue – Transcendence –  into an adapted short film called The Language of Love.

Written by and starring Ho himself, the sensitive short film follows the conflicted internal monologue of a teen who realises that he’s in love with his best friend. Ho was mentored by leading gay playwright Tommy Murphy who assisted in transforming the three minute monologue into a nine minute short film directed by emerging director Laura Scrivano.

“Homosexuality is still a sensitive topic, and I immediately felt
pressured to write something that was candid but not disrespectful to
the LGBT community,”
Ho said of the project. “I wanted to
write something that would make me cry just like the stunning It’s Time advertisement for marriage equality, something that would resonate with people no matter what their sexuality.”

The result is a confessional look at love which anyone can relate to (CC: Australian politicians).
