I am an uncultured swine, I’ll admit it. How else can I excuse myself for not watching HBO’s The Young Pope. I know nothing about it. Nothing! But HBO just unleashed the trailer for its sequel The New Pope and the only thing I can say is: JUDE LAW. It is the year of our Lord 2019 and I am frothing over a pope.

This new nine-episode season is once again directed by Academy Award-winning director Paolo Sorrentino. In The Young Pope (2016), Lenny Belardo (Law) becomes the first American pope in history. I don’t know what happens at the end and since I don’t want to spoil it for myself, I won’t be googling it. But if you know, you know. In The New Pope – for whatever reason – Lenny is no longer running things. The less hot but still excellent John Malkovich is as Pope Giovanni III.
In the trailer, Giovanni cooly walks with his head held high surrounded by his cardinals and men of God in the Vatican. In contrast – like a Greek god – Lenny emerges from the sea dressed in nothing but white budgie smugglers. He’s flanked by women. He might not be the Pope anymore but he seems to be looking / doing just fine. Too fine, you might say.
