The Captain Planet Movie Is Happening

Captain Planet and The Planeteers is set to burrow itself from the nostalgic depths of your childhood to receive the feature-length treatment it so desperately deserves.

Be still, beating hearts of you 90’s kids. Be still.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony Pictures is in final stages of snagging the rights to the second longest running cartoon of the 1990’s (113 episodes), Captain Planet and The Planeteers, set for their film adaptation to be produced by Mark Gordon, Don Murphy and Susan Montford. No director has been named, though if the words “Michael” and “Bay” are ever seen in the same sentence as Captain Planet, a boycott is likely to ensue. The power, as they say, is definitely not yours.

You can assume that the film will be live action, to stray from its origins, and probably won’t star Don Cheadle as its enviro-loving, blue Lycra clad hero. Speculation is welcome about who will play the fabulously interracial Planteers—those from every continent except Australia and Antarctica (tear). A quick dip into the show’s impeccably maintained Wikipedia page will have you remembering the elaborate complexities of the cartoon that clearly took itself too seriously. The list of “Eco Villains” is an impressive 14 characters long, including such gas-guzzling, litter-throwing baddies with amazing names like: Verminous Skumm, Hoggish Greedly, Sky Sludger, Ooze and Tank Flusher III.

Let’s relive the magic that was Captain Planet, and fondly remember its legendary theme song:
