David Benioff & D.B. Weiss Checked Their Schedule & They Can’t Do ‘Star Wars’ Anymore, Soz

David Benioff and DB Weiss have peaced out of their Star Wars trilogy.

Were you excited at the prospect of a new trilogy of Star Wars films that eschewed the Skywalker family entirely, all helmed by Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss? Well bury that excitement deep, deep down and never think about it again because that is no longer happening. Sorry.

According to a report from Deadline, the duo looked at their calendars, crunched the numbers, and subsequently realised that they totally had to bail, soz. In a statement to Deadline, the pair said that the time commitments required between the new Star Wars trilogy and their big, swanky Netflix deal would not allow them to do either properly. “There are only so many hours in the day, and we felt we could not do justice to both Star Wars and our Netflix projects,” the statement read. “So we are regretfully stepping away.”

The pair did, however, express gratitude at being given the opportunity to go to some meetings. “We love Star Wars,” they said. “When George Lucas built it, he built us too. Getting to talk about Star Wars with him and the current Star Wars team was the thrill of a lifetime, and we will always be indebted to the saga that changed everything.”

While this might be disappointed to be people at the middle of the Star Wars / GoT Venn diagram, they can at least console themselves with the unfathomable bevy of Star Wars content that is yet to come, with series like The Mandalorian and an as-yet-unnamed show about Obi-Wan still in the pipes.

Staying at the helm of a Star Wars project seems to be a relatively difficult task, if the experiences of Colin Trevorrow or dynamic duo Chris Miller and Phil Lord are anything to go off. Taika Waititi’s reaction to someone asking him (in a now-deleted tweet) if he’d like to direct a Star Wars movie seems to sum it up:
