HOLY SHIT: The ‘GoT’ Creators Are Being Given The Keys To ‘Star Wars’

Well, this is a surprise. It’s been announced that Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will be creating their very own series of Star Wars films.

Yep. It really does seem like Disney and LucasFilm are hellbent on cranking out at least one Star Wars film a year from here into eternity. According to a post on the Star Wars website, this is entirely seperate to both the Skywalker saga which makes up the core of the series, as well as the new trilogy helmed by Last Jedi director Rian Johnson.

“David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”

In a statement, Benioff and Weiss said they were excited to take on the project, which I assume is pretty obvious. Considering how many wayward directors have been booted from the franchise, maybe they should be sweating instead:

In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since. We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete.

Based on that quote, we’re probably at least a year away from them kicking off production – season 8 of Game of Thrones airs in 2019. What will a Benioff/Weiss Star Wars look like? Who knows. Will it feature nudity? Probably not.

It certainly gives us an interesting glimpse into where Star Wars is going. Looks like LucasFilm are treating it like the Expanded Universe of old: lots of interesting stories taking place across the Star Wars universe, handled across multiple films by different directors.
