You may have been far far away from the D23 Expo in California today, but you’ve probably still heard a galaxy‘s worth of news coming out of the event … I dunno, I’ve used up my supply of Star Wars puns but the point of this is that Ewan McGregor will return to the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi for a new TV series.

Little is known about the show at this point, but it will be part of the formidable slate of titles to appear on the new Disney+ streaming service. In recent days, there have been strong rumours that the actor would be picking up his lightsaber once again, and these were confirmed when he appeared at the very end of the Disney+ showcase.

Ewan McGregor asked LucasFilm head Kathleen Kennedy to ask him if he would be playing the beloved character again. She obliged and he answered “yes”, to the cheers of the audience.

The Scottish actor portrayed Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars prequel trilogy, culminating in Revenge Of The Sith in 2005. He has a family history with the sci-fi franchise, as his uncle played pilot Wedge Antilles in the original films.

The untitled Obi-Wan series will be one of several Star Wars shows on the new streaming service, with others including The Mandalorian and a Rogue One spin-off starring Diego Luna.
