The Film Independent Spirit Awards were held earlier today in Los Angeles, and while host Aubrey Plaza did a great job of opening the night, RuPaul’s Drag Race star Shangela threatened to steal the show with a raucous musical performance.
Shagela, who appeared alongside Willam in A Star Is Born, took to the stage to sing a medley about some of the films being honoured … kind of. “Here are the nominees for best original songs that aren’t actually even in these films,” she said.
Eighth Grade director Bo Burnham seemed wildly amused by the song and dance number, Joaquin Phoenix slightly less so, although I guess that’s his perpetual state of being. You can go ahead and check out the performance below:
