Ruby Rose Speaks Out About Her Battle With Depression

Later this year, Ruby Rose will appear in the third season of Orange Is The New Black, as a possible new love interest for Piper, and, we assume, as an instigator of gleeful mayhem inside Litchfield Penitentiary.
In a recent interview with News Limited, she covered a lot of ground, reflecting on this new role and on her engagement to Phoebe Dahl, as well as opening up about some more personal struggles she has faced in the past few years.
In 2013, Rose memorably took to Twitter to announce: “It is with great sadness that despite everything I have tried in the short time I was given I am still losing my battle with depression … these things need attention sometimes.”

A trip to a rehab facility followed. She says that this admission likely came as a surprise to many, due to her tough exterior, but says that her admission, one made of “necessity”, was a long time coming.
“I was so desperate for that time off,” she told News Limited. “I needed to go to the States and work on ‘me’.

I had to get control over this mental illness.”

“I’m a great actor,” Rose continued. “I’m pretty badarse and I looked like things didn’t affect me, but I’m a super-sensitive person and I didn’t believe in myself.”
Of the vast difference between her public persona and her private one, Rose candidly said “I’m not that person who you think is confident with her tatts, or hanging out with Katy Perry, crashing formals.”
The latter incident occurred in 2010, when Rose and Perry actually did crash a Melbourne high school formal, dancing to ‘Single Ladies’ before Perry busted out a rendition of ‘California Gurls.”
Rose, now a lot happier, is adamant that it’s important for her to be open about her struggles, saying “I can’t take the good part of the job without telling people who I actually am – I think we owe people something.”
As well as acting, touring as a DJ and helping Dahl out with her fashion line, Rose told News Limited she is planning a “big, glamorous” wedding to her partner for some time next year.

“We all have the ability to love unconditionally and I worked out that the only way you can have a successful relationship is if you love unconditionally and take the risk,” she said.
