There’s A Live-Action ‘Recess’ Fan Movie In The Works & King Bob Is Probs Behind It

Recess

Two filmmakers over in Canada are hoping to crowdfund enough money to help make their unofficial live-action Recess movie. This has absolutely no connection to the Disney Channel series, hence the “crowdfund.”

Vancouver creators Jerome Yoo and Kent Donguines are hoping to make a live-action, re-imagining of the iconic and beloved series in a high school setting. Instead of figuring out where the ball goes when you kick it over the fence, this movie will explore current issues like peer pressure, social media, and identity.

Yoo and Donguines aren’t just two random filmmakers though, they’re accomplished creators in their own rights with previous works appearing at the Cannes Short Film Corner, Toronto International Film Festival, and the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival. They’ve also won a slew of awards between them including the 2019 Canada International Film Festival Award of Excellence and the Best Short Film, Best Directing, Best Screenwriting Award at the 2019 Vancouver Short Film Festival.

These guys aren’t messing around, they already have an 11-page script and a cast at the ready. Speaking of which, the movie has already locked in a couple of familiar faces to star. Deadly Class’s Benjamin Wadsworth will play everyone’s fave T.J. Detweiller and To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before Riverdale star Emilija Baranac will play one of the Ashleys, Ashley T.

Louriza Tronco will star as badass (AshleySpinelli, Sean Depner as BFG Mikey Blumberg, Lillian Doucet-Roche as the smartest of the group Gretchen Grundler, Clive Holloway as Gus Griswald, Fritzy Klevans Destine as sporty boi Vince Lasalle, Sydney Scotia as the Ashley A, Kelcey Mawema as Ashley B, Brenna Llewellyn as Ashley Q, and Adam Dimarco as big weasel Randall Weems. The team are apparently still in talks with a potential King Bob actor but according to them, “It’s someone… Scandalous.

With four days on the clock, the team have raised over AUD$1,700 on crowdfunding website Indiegogo. All money raised will go directly to the film.

“We’re a volunteer crew and cast, however there’s still a lot to consider when making a quality film,” the pitch reads.

The funds will cover production costs like props, costumes, hair and makeup, and food, insurance and locations, gear and rentals, and post production. All up, that’s an estimated cost of USD$9000.

In return for their donations, fans can receive little goodies like a Thank You Video From Cast (USD$50), Your Name in the Credits(USD$100), or a Cast Signed TJ Hat for USD$500. If you’re extremely keen to see this movie happen, you can chip in USD$1500 for an Associate Producer credit.

The synopsis:

When Mikey gets his fragile heart broken by Ashley A, the gang (with TJ at the helm) try and cheer him up with treats at Kelso’s corner store. On their quest to make Mikey smile again, they discover that something more sinister than a break-up is brewing at Third Street High…

There’s trouble lurking in the shadows and it ain’t Finster, folks.
