Melbourne Might Soon be Hanging Ten on its Very Own Surf Beach

Thanks to the human impulse to put things where they’re really not supposed to be – ski slopes in the middle of the Dubai desert, Jacqui Lambie in a position of political influence – there’s a proposal underway to give inner-city Melbourne its very own surf beach.

ABC News report that the proposed water park, which will float off the end of Docklands, has yet to receive the blessing of the City of Melbourne, but they called it an “interesting concept” and indicated that they’re #chill with the idea, as long as private funding is available.
Engineering firm Arup came up with a design for the park, which will include a beach, a grassy area, a deck and a pool with waves of adjustable height, and will be the envy of other, less cool Australian cities.
Architect and surfer Damian Rogers, who drew up the initial concept, said that the project will cost around $8 million to complete, and will use filtered saltwater from the harbour, with waves that can be dialed up for experts or down for n00bs.
Though construction on the artificial beach is likely still a fair way off, the line is probably already too long for you to have any reasonable hope of getting in.
