Man Dies In Shark Attack In Northern NSW

Following news this morning of a Byron Bay man driving himself to hospital following a shark attack, tragedy has struck Northern NSW as a man has died in a shark attack near Ballina, on the NSW coast.

The attack took place at Shelly Beach, according to ABC, where other surfers pulled the man to safety and first aid was performed. Tragically, the man did not survive the attack this morning.

The ABC reports that swimmers at Shelly Beach have since been ordered out of the water, with beaches from South Ballina to Lennox Head remaining closed during the high level of shark attack threats.

The Northern Star reports that both of the young man’s legs were taken by the shark. Witnesses allegedly estimated that the shark was between 3.5 and 4 metres long. The age and identity of the swimmer is yet to be confirmed.

Incredibly frightening news – stay safe on beaches this summer, Australia.
