Mad Men’s Final Season Will Be Split In Two, Which Is Annoying

The creators of period TV drama Mad Men are going all Breaking Bad on us and splitting the seventh and final season in two, with the first half to air in 2014, and the final half in 2015.

It’s an annoying tactic – the gap in the middle of Breaking Bad‘s final season was like the televisual equivalent of blue balls – but its a clever way for networks to increase the longevity of a series, without just pushing on with new episodes long after the show has worn out its welcome, and any semblance of realism or believability has faded (we’re looking at you, Dexter).

AMC president Charlie Collier said in a statement “This approach has worked well for many programs across multiple networks, and, most recently for us with Breaking Bad which attracted nearly double the number of viewers to its second half premiere than had watched any previous episode,” while Mad Men series creator Matthew Weiner said “We plan to take advantage of this chance to have a more elaborate story told in two parts, which can resonate a little bit longer in the minds of our audience.”
