As much as the nominations are a celebration of all that was good in the world of cinema over the past year, much of the talk has centered around the notable snubs for the big night. Russel Crowe failed to land a Supporting Actor nomination for Les Miserables while Weaver trumped Nicole Kidman’s highly fancied turn in The Papaerboy. The biggest surprises though came in the Best Director Category where Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty), Tom Hooper (Les Miserables), and Ben Affleck (Argo) all fell short.
Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln topped the the overall list with 11 nominations, Ang Lee’s Life Of Pi scored 10, and in a kick to the guts to aspiring triple threats everywhere, Les Miserables came in with a lousy 8 nominations. Airing on the 24th of Feb, expect Weaver to face an uphill battle toppling short-priced favorite Anne Hathaway (Les Miserables). Fingers crossed for Jackman who’s giving plenty away in terms of Oscar clout to Daniel Day-Lewis (Lincoln), while Watts looks set to take advantage of a Meryl Streep gap year as she goes head to head with Hollywood ‘it‘ girl Jennifer Lawrence (Silver Linings Playbook).
