Detective Pikachu is months away but already, a sequel is officially in the works. In other words, Warner Bros., Legendary Pictures, and The Pokémon Company are extremely confident in this film.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, the crew have hired 22 Jump Street writer Oren Uziel to pen the script. The man also has the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog film to his name as well as The Cloverfield Paradox.
The live-action flick, the first of its kind for the Pokémon franchise, stars Deadpool‘s Ryan Reynolds as Pikachu.
Will Reynolds make at least one Deadpool joke in this movie? Probably.
The tale begins with the mysterious disappearance of private eye Harry Goodman, prompting his son – 21-year-old Tim (Justice Smith) to investigate. And who better to help than Harry’s adorable and witty former partner, Detective Pikachu. Discovering they have the unique ability to understand each other, Tim and Pikachu set out to solve the mystery in Ryme City – the thriving metropolis where people and Pokémon live in harmony.
Ken Watanabe (Memoirs of a Geisha, Inception, Godzilla) also stars in the film as does Kathryn Newton (Lady Bird, Big Little Lies).
Sure, it takes a couple of views to get used to Ryan Reynolds’ voice coming out of Pikachu but once you’re over that hurdle, the movie actually seems pretty great and maybe – just maybe, it won’t fall victim to the horrid video-game-to-movie curse.
Detective Pikachu will land in Aussie cinemas May 9.
In case you were wondering, yes – official merchandise is already available.
You won’t need a detective to help you find these new #PokemonTCG collections, apparel, and toys based on the upcoming #DetectivePikachu movie, Trainers!
