The notoriously charming, eloquent and quick Sedaris—whose childhood and banal everyday experiences are told with such conviction and dry wit, he can easily pale everyone else’s in comparison—puts on popular shows that tend to sell out globally; though how to classify his genre of performance, if you could call it that, is a little tricky. Ticket buyers for his Australian tours can expect an evening that’s not really stand-up comedy, not really a book reading; kind of like an older, nerdier Mike Birbiglia, he’ll fill in a few hours talking and telling stories, and everyone will listen adoringly. As Sedaris said himself, “I’m the most important person in the lives of almost everyone I know and a good number of the people I’ve never even met.”
I’m not sure how he does it, but when Sedaris speaks, he can even make a really lame Dad joke seem freaking hilarious.
