Organisers for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games were right on the money when they appointed Zhang Yimou, director of the film House of Flying Daggers to conceive the opening ceremony – even for people who find ceremonies of any kind a harrowing/repulsive experience, the sheer scale and insane visuals (not to mention regiment-like power over a mass army of hyper-flexible circus youths) of the China games made it a bearable four hour slog. The London Organising Committee are obviously a perceptive bunch because according to reports they’re angling to have their country’s own iconic filmmaker – Danny “Slumdog Millionaire” Boyle – take the directors seat for the 2012 opening ceremony.
While it is unlikely that Boyle will have access to 50,000 ten year olds who can turn hands-free cartwheels in perfect unison, this is the dude who made Trainspotting so expect a super stylish, fast paced production, with a witty, uniquely British sense of humour and pulsating soundtrack, and perhaps a cameo from Ewan MacGregor or Tilda Swinton. I’d be down for that.
Maybe it’s time to visit the UK
