Grant Morrison is a hero of the comic book world, but not the kind who wears a cape or drives a GrantMobile. Being one of the few people commissioned to write stories for both Marvel and DC Comics publishing giants, Morrison has helmed storylines for massive franchises like Superman, Batman and the X-Men, as well as creating his own titles like The Invisibles, and he has some interesting news for Australian comic book fans looking for a little local flavour in their major releases.
In the country for the Sydney Opera House Graphic Festival last week, Morrison revealed that as part of his upcoming Multiverse series for DC Comics, (which will feature parallel universe reimaginings of popular heroes, like Vampire Batman or Nazi Superman) he plans to include a storyline exploring an Aboriginal Australian hero character called Thunderer, who he compares to Marvel’s Thor (that’d be the superhero who also happens to be the Nordic God of Thunder, played recently in cinematic form by Chris Hemsworth and his abs.)
Morrison said “[Thunderer is] one of the main characters in this series about the parallel worlds in the DC universe… Australia is one of my favourite places and I’m very glad I get to drag you into my world of the surreal.”
An Aboriginal superhero would provide a long-overdue push for a subset of Australian faces that are too often lacking from mainstream media. Earlier this year actor Jay Laga’aia became something of a mouthpiece for the cause after he bemoaned the lack of colour in Channel Ten’s drama series Wonderland.
