Cate Blanchett & Mia Wasikowska To Play Lovers In ‘Carol’

Cinema’s antipodean dream team – that’s Cate Blanchett and Mia Wasikowska – surges onward, with the two cast opposite each other in an upcoming adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s (The Talented Mr. Ripley, Strangers On A Train) lesbian romance novel, The Price of Salt, with an official synopsis that reads as follows:

Carol is a love story about pursuit, betrayal and passion that follows the burgeoning relationship between two very different women in 1950s New York. One, a girl in her twenties working in a department store who dreams of a more fulfilling life, and the other, a wife trapped in a loveless, moneyed marriage desperate to break free but fearful of losing her daughter in the process.

Blanchett also starred in the filmic adaptation of The Talented Mr. Ripley – also known as the most stylish film ever – so add to that a Mad Men era backdrop and the ingenuous charms of Wasikowska and you’ve got some highly-anticipated screen gold. Plus, you know they’re going to pash.

The two actresses are also slated to make their directorial debut together in Robert Connolly’s (Balibo, Three Dollars and The Bank) episodic adaptation of Tim Winton novel The Turning. How’s that for blonde ambition?
