Camila Cabello Goes Into Damage Control After Racist Tumblr Posts Resurface On Twitter

Camila Cabello has posted a lengthy statement on her social media, apologising for “horrible and hurtful language” she used in the past, which has resurfaced on Twitter.

The language in question appears to have come from her old Tumblr, and seemingly show her using racist slurs. She also appeared to reblog a meme making light of Chris Brown‘s 2009 assault of Rihanna. The entire thread on Twitter was created to “expose” the singer’s “racist and downright disturbing” posts on Tumblr.

“When I was younger, I used language that I’m deeply ashamed of and will regret forever,” the 22-year-old wrote in her statement. “I was uneducated and ignorant and once I became aware of the history and the weight and the true meaning behind this horrible and hurtful language, I was deeply embarrassed I ever used it.

“I apologised then and I apologise again now.”

Cabello said she would “never intentionally hurt anyone” and that she regrets using the language “from the bottom of my heart.

“As much as I wish I could, I can’t go back in time and change things I said in the past. But once you know better, you do better and that’s all I can do.”

She went on to say that she has grown and learned so much since her time on the blogging platform.

“Those mistakes don’t represent the person I am or a person I’ve ever been,” she continued. “I only stand and have ever stood for love and inclusivity, and my heart has never, even then, had any ounce of hate or divisiveness.

“The truth is I was embarrassingly ignorant and unaware. I use my platform to speak out about injustice and inequality and I’ll continue doing that. I can’t say enough how deeply sorry and ashamed I feel, and I apologise again from the bottom of my heart.”

Honestly, I’m not familiar with Cabello’s history enough to make a comment. But it’s good that she’s publicly addressed it, at least. Her apology seems genuine but it’s hardly a saintly act. Cabello’s public apology is just the latest from a high-profiled name / celebrity who once said something awful.
