I first encountered Pedro Almodovar when I accidentally watched “All About My Mother” on a late night channel surf. I was probably 14 at the time and like any young teen watching a “world movie” I was hoping for a sex scene or two under the guise of intellectual stimulation. Instead I got AIDS, Transvestites, glorious colour and delirious melodrama. Two things happened that night – the movie scared the shit out of me and Almodovar became one of my favourite international Directors.
Fast forward to 2009 and on the strength of films such as “Talk To Her” and “Bad Education” I’ll always be mildly excited about anything he directs. His latest film “Broken Embraces” stars perennial muse Penelope Cruz and judging from the trailer alone has all the makings of an Almodovar classic.
