Benedict Cumberbatch Confirmed For Latest Oscar-Bait Role As ‘The Grinch’

The being known as Benedict Cumberbatch is presumably on a mission to insert his beautiful alien face in each and every one of our Earthly films. Failing that, his velvety voice will do.

That’s the only explanation we can come up with for why the Oscar and BAFTA nominated bloke has deigned to appear in the next animated rendition of The Grinch.

Well, that, and money. But we’re going with extraterrestrial movie dominance, yeah?

According to Illumination Entertainment CEO Chris Meledandri, Benny was a shoo-in “to express comedic wickedness while embodying vulnerability,” and “that vulnerability [will allow] us to create a character that is not only highly entertaining, but also has an irresistible appeal.”

The new flick is expected to hit screens in November next year, for obviously Christmas-related reasons, which will give us plenty of time to stack the new bloke against Jim Carrey. At the very least, they’ve both got unnerving levels of facial plasticity.

Real talk though, he’s proven himself as a capable voice-actor for his work in The Hobbit films, and his upcoming role in The Jungle Book probably won’t hurt either. If you absolutely can’t wait to be over-encumbered (heh) then feel free to watch his equally-wacky, live-action trailer for Doctor Strange riiight here.
