It’s a distant memory now, made dim by waves of hype and googly eyed wonder, but there was a time when Avatar’s box office pulling power was in doubt. Blue cats? Unobtanium? 3D Goggles? It’ll never work, surely not, it’s too hokey. Well naysayers, not only has Avatar recouped the hundreds of millions of dollars it cost to produce, it’s now on track to become one of the highest grossing films ever.
Avatar is now the fastest movie to ever reach $1 billion in global ticket sales reaching the titanic box office numbers (see what I did there?) in just 17 days. But wait there’s more, Avatar is now also the fourth highest grossing film of all time behind “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” and “Lord of the Rings: Return of the King” with Cameron’s record breaking Titanic holding down number one at $1.8 billion. For Cameron fans a one-two punch seems inevitable as Avatar need only gross another $100 million to secure second place on the list. Here’s to James Cameron seeing hundred dollar bills in 3D.
