BigPond Movies have surveyed more than 1,250 Australians to reveal the nation’s top Oscars picks ahead of tomorrow’s official nominations announcement. After snagging Best Comedy or Musical at the Golden Globes earlier this month, Oscars prognosticators have tipped The Artist to take out Best Picture, however the BigPond Index reveals that Aussies are tipping War Horse to take the win, followed by movie most likely to make you cry The Help and Brad Pitt baseball drama Moneyball. In the Best Actor category Aussies went with Golden Globe winner George Clooney for his understated turn in The Descendants, followed by Brad Pitt in Moneyball and Sean Penn in The Tree of Life. For the ladies, SNL’s Kristen Wiig was tipped to win Best Actress for Bridesmaids, which she co-wrote, followed by Keira Knightly in A Dangerous Method and Viola Davis in The Help.

In discouraging news for people like Pedro Almodovar and Wong Kar Wai, our favourite genres in order were: comedy, romantic comedy, action, sci fi, thriller, classic, horror, animation, art house then foreign.

Australia’s favourite Oscar’s moments were Geoffrey Rush winning best actor for Shine, followed by Mel Gibson winning Best Director and Best Film for Braveheart, and Cate Blanchett winning Best Supporting Actress for The Aviator.

The nation’s favourite movies of 2011 were Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, followed by Bridesmaids and Water for Elephants.

Jennifer Lawrence will announce nominations in 10 of the 24 Oscars categories tomorrow in Beverly Hills.
