An ‘Aquaman’ Horror Spin-Off About Those Trench Creatures Is In The Works

RIGHTO. Warner Bros. has given the go ahead to an Aquaman spin-off which sure, makes sense, considering the film a) made a billion dollars at the box office and b) dethroned The Dark Knight Rises as DC Comics‘ highest-earning movie ever. But, rather interestingly, the spin-off will be a horror movie… about those deadly Trench creatures… titled The Trench.

Per The Hollywood ReporterAquaman director James Wan – man behind the The Conjuring flicks – will partner with his horror mate Peter Safran to produce the film. Safran has previously worked on The Conjuring, The Nun, and Annabelle.

If your memory’s a bit foggy, the Trench – about a million of them – attack Aquaman (Jason Momoa) and Mera (Amber Heard) towards the end of the film when they’re trying to find the trident.

The creatures were introduced into DC lore back in 2011 and are described as having superhuman strength, razor-sharp teeth, and the ability to spit a chemical that causes paralysis from their mouths so that’s lovely.

It’s still early days so not much else is known but THR shares the film will have a way smaller budget than Aquaman and will not feature any of the main cast. Make of that what you will.

As for an actual Aquaman sequel, Wan is said to be in talks with Warner Bros. however he is yet to commit to anything. The director will oversee the development of a sequel, which includes selecting the writers, before he makes his decision. Ultimately, he’ll only sign on if the script is a bloody winner.

Aquaman is currently the 22nd highest-grossing film worldwide with an insane $1.1 billion at the box office.
