Adam Driver Says ‘Ep. VIII’ Is Pretty Dang Similar To ‘Empire Strikes Back’

It has only been 9 months since ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens‘ came out. Can you believe that?
It feels like FOR-FUCKING-EVER AGO, and the next instalment of the trilogy film isn’t out for a year and 3 months. (We do have the release of ‘Star Wars’ story ‘Rogue One’ to console us through this very difficult time, though.)
However, the hype has already begun. The hype awakens, if you will.
Adam Driver, who plays ‘Very Bad SonBen Solo / Kylo Ren, did an interview to talk about how it’s going currently working the film, which is simply being referred to right now as ‘Episode VIII‘.
One of the highest praises AND criticisms of ‘The Force Awakens‘ was that it (intentionally) followed very closely to the original first film in the original trilogy, ‘A New Hope’.
While some believed that the close homage while still introducing a new story and new characters was done inexplicably well; others believed it was ‘too close’ to the original and it should have been fresher.
So, it comes as no surprise that Driver has told Collider that part dos of the new trilogy has certain comparisons to the second movie in the OG trilogy, ‘The Empire Strikes Back‘.

“It’s great. It’s similar to how The Empire Strikes Back has a different tone.

For that people always go, ‘oooh, it’s dark,’ but I don’t know that it necessarily is. It’s just different in tone in a way that I think is great and necessary but also very clear.

[Rian Johnson] trusts [that] his audience is ready for nuance and ambiguity. He’s not dumbing anything down for someone and that’s really fun to play.”
He speaks openly about new director Rian Johnson, and the transfer over from the captaincy of ‘TFA’ director J.J. Abrams
“Rian is coming into something that we kind of set up and he just took it to the next level in a really great way,” Driver said. “He wrote it, too, and Rian’s writing is so clear. I learned a lot of things about my character through his writing. Some things we talked about before and some things we didn’t. He was working on [the script] while we were still working on the first one.

To understand what J.J. was doing and take ownership from there is kind of a remarkable thing. And he’s the most polite, unassuming guy and he was appropriately territorial about some things but would still be the first to admit when something’s not working.

A lot of times you need to rise to understand what the script is, and perhaps I’m beginning to be unclear, but he’s a great person to work with.”

Iiiiiiiiiiiinteresting.
