In an interview published by the Financial Times, Sony has confirmed it is indeed working on a successor to the PlayStation 4. They’re not calling it the PlayStation 5 just yet, but it’s almost definitely a new console.

“At this point, what I can say is it’s necessary to have a next-generation hardware,” Sony CEO, Kenichiro Yoshida, told the publication. It’s not much, nor should it come as a surprise that the company would be working on something new given both competitors, Nintendo and Microsoft, have either announced or are rumoured to be working on new hardware of their own. Furthermore, a heap of games have already been announced for next-gen hardware, so there’s that, too.
According to Financial Times sources, the new console “might not represent a major departure from the PS4, and that the fundamental architecture would be similar.” In other words, don’t expect anything insanely different. I’d wager we’ll see a step up similar to jump between the PS3 and Ps4, but it will be interesting to see whether or not the company will want to mix things up in light of the success of Nintendo‘s Switch or Microsoft’s newly announced game streaming service, Project xCloud.
Either way, some reckon an announcement could be just around the corner given Yoshida’s comments, but we’ll just have to wait and see what happens. Even if they do announce a PlayStation 5 this year, it’s safe to say it won’t be here until at least 2020.
