A New PlayStation Is Reportedly Coming In 2018 ‘Cos Console War Never Ends

As E3 fast approaches, rumours of announcements from all the big players are beginning to emerge. This time, it’s PlayStation‘s turn to cop some gossip.

We already know the specs for Xbox‘s next console, Project Scorpio, so it’s only natural that Sony would have something in the works to compete with Microsoft‘s offering. According to noted analyst, Damian Thong, they do.
Thong, who correctly predicted the PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro, reckons Sony will be releasing the next-gen PlayStation “by the second half of 2018.”

So what will this new console look like? It’s hard to say, but if Project Scorpio is anything to go by, it’ll be more of a hardware upgrade than a generational style release.
While it may not seem like it from the outside, gaming is – from a hardware perspective – making a move towards PC-like upgrades, rather than singular consoles that dominate the landscape for a decade or so.
For example, the advantages of a PS4 Pro are simply improved graphical quality and the ability to play in 4K. They can still play the same games as PS4 users and vice versa. We’re likely to see more of this moving forward, with the phasing out of older hardware becoming less rigid.
We’ll likely hear more about all of this jazz closer to E3 in June if this is a full-blown PS5 situation. If it’s simply another upgrade console, it could be a short notice situation like the Pro, which was announced just two months before its release.
Either way, bring it on, nerds.
