Vampire Weekend’s Gay Member

Vampire Weekend’s multi-instrumentalist, producer and (coincidentally) best dressed member, Rostam Batmanglij, has crossed the threshold between In and Out going on-the-record about being gay in a recent interview with Out magazine.

During the interview Batmanglij, who also shares the band’s songwriting duties – speaks about introducing a homosexual perspective into Vampire Weekend songs. His song “Diplomat’s Son” off their latest album is about a gay relationship, an example of the lyrics:

That night I smoked a joint
With my best friend
We found ourselves in bed
When I woke up he was gone

We’ve all been there.

Batmanglij also “got gay” on the song “I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend” for his musical side-project Discovery. He said: “With that song I was having fun, but at the same time it was honest – those lyrics are meaningful to me, they come from my heart. I was disappointed when it didn’t become a gay anthem, but, you know, it’s not too late.”

Mardi Gras is just around the corner. Could “I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend” possibly compete with the current frontrunner: David Guetta’s undeniably catchy banger “When Love Takes Over”?
