What’s the deal with Twitter? It’s like Facebook status updates, without the Facebook! (Cue unmistakable bassline)
Seinfeld is one of the few 90’s relics to have unironically found a home in the otherwise pretty disposal world of memes, quotes, hashtags and other variants of online humour.
One of the best Twitter (which, by definition, is the home of yada, yada, yada) hashtags to emerge locally has been #SeinfeldMelbourne (and its various geographical offshoots), which surfaced over the weekend, with users coming up with plotlines that relocate Jerry, George, Elaine and Kramer and the circus of supporting characters of the Seinfeld universe to the bizarro world of Australia. Twitter user @BR_TR invented the idea of #SeinfeldMelbourne over the weekend, based on the work of @SeinfeldToday:
You know how @SeinfeldToday recontextualizes Seinfeld to modern day New York? – I’m working on Seinfeld Melbourne – It’s gonna be awful.

#SeinfeldMelbourne spread like a rumour in a Florida retirement village, and it wasn’t long before #SeinfeldSydney, #SeinfeldBrisbane, #SeinfeldAdelaide, #SeinfeldPerth and even one or two #SeinfeldHobarts popped up, suggesting ideas for episodes about nothing, featuring local landmarks, people and even overall cultural identities. Here are our faves.
