AACTA Names Best Feature Film Nominees Of 2012

Today the first round of nominations for the second annual AACTA Awards have been announced and serves as a reminder that the year 2012 is hooning past in a sidecar giving the finger to us all through a trail of dust. But moreover, it’s a reminder of the impressive output of Australian feature films over the past 12 months, with a robust 23 movies named as contenders in the Best Feature Film category.

It’s a diverse mix; from recently released box office hit The Sapphires [Review here], to the enjoyable adult romcom Not Suitable For Children, acclaimed Indigenous drama and Cannes Film Festival contender Toomelah, and to-be-released commercial anglers like PJ Hogan’s Mental and Kath & Kimderella.

The ones I’ve just named are the movies whose name you probably recognise from Film Festival programs or via the kind of national press only afforded by generous marketing budgets, however a significant chunk of the nominees will be less familiar to your ears. Hopefully this will act as motivation to hit the cinema or check the video store and attempt to watch as many of these films as you can before the 2nd AACTA Awards take place in early in 2013.
