Tour de France Champ Bradley Wiggins Hospitaised After Training Accident

Bradley Wiggins has been taken to hospital after being hit by a car while on a training ride near his home in north-west England. A police spokesman said the British cycling star’s injuries were ‘not thought to be life-threatening‘.

In a year shame for cycling, it seems karma’s radar was way off this morning*, with the likeable and drug-free Wiggins sustaining suspected broken ribs after the collision with the Vauxhall Astra van.

Wiggins was hit by the van as it was exiting a service station. The driver was uninjured and is not expected to be charged. She was heard to say afterwards “I can’t believe it. Of all the people to hit, bloody Bradley Wiggins.” Yes, it’s not everyday you mow down a national treasure.

In a statement on its website, Team Sky said:

We can confirm that on Wednesday evening Bradley Wiggins was involved in a road traffic accident whilst riding his bike near his home in Lancashire. He is being kept in hospital overnight for observation but the injuries he has sustained are not thought to be serious and he is expected to make a full and speedy recovery.

We will announce more details in due course.

The down to earth Wiggins’ dudeness was on full display after his London Gold medal effort as he ripped into celebrity culture. Let’s hope he’s back on the road sooner rather than later.

*Not that I’m suggesting Lance Armstrong anyone deserves to get hit by a car. It’s just if you HAD to choose, I certainly wouldn’t choose Wiggins.
